As of January 1, 2026 the "As of Right" practice or "deemed certification" provisions of the Labour Mobility Act (Ontario) are in force and will apply to the AATO and to Canadian Architectural Technologists practicing in another province or territory, who are eligible for deemed certification under that Act and Ontario Regulation199/25.
Persons having " deemed certification" need not be physically resident in Ontario, nor practise full-time in Ontario, but must be and remain in good standing with their relevant regulatory authority in their "home" province and satisfy the other conditions established by the Act and Regulation. They may practise in Ontario for up to six months before being formally registered with the AATO. They must also make contact with the AATO Registrar (registrar@aato.ca) within 10 days of commencing practice as an Architectural Technologist in Ontario.
Architectural Technologists practising in Ontario by way of "deemed certification" must conform to the scope of practice and other requirements applicable to Ontario's Architectural Technologists and must also comply with any terms, limitations or conditions applied to their licence by their home regulatory authority. They must also have appropriate Professional Liability Insurance coverage in Ontario and must also comply with the "good character" and other requirements specified by the AATO, as allowed by the legislation. A $25 application fee is also required.
