An Architectural Technologist currently certified and in good standing in another Canadian province or territory who is practising in Ontario under "deemed certification" is eligible for registration to practise in Ontario by the AATO for up to six (6) months while the AATO processes the application for regular certification.
Ontario residency is not required as a condition of certification by the AATO.
Eligibility for certification by the AATO requires that the individual is currently certified [1] and is in good standing with the regulatory authority of the individual's originating province or territory. The individual is required to provide a letter or some other document acceptable to the AATO from the home regulatory authority affirming current certification and good standing with the out-of-province regulatory authority. The individual must remain in good standing with the out-of-province regulatory authority during the entire term of deemed certification.
Notice to the AATO: An individual seeking certification by the AATO under the "Deemed Certification" provisions must notify the AATO Registrar in writing within 10 (ten) business days of commencing practice in Ontario (hereinafter referred to as "Notice"). Processing of Out-of-Province Applications: The AATO will provide written acknowledgment of acceptance of application for certification with the AATO by an out-of-province individual within 10 days of receipt of said application and the AATO undertakes to process the application expeditiously . The AATO will accept the credentialing by the out-of-province regulator as eligibility for membership with the AATO. Proof of Certification: The individual must arrange for confirmation of current certification to be sent to the AATO by the individual's home regulatory authority, which confirmation must include any terms, conditions and limitations that apply to said certification and the record of any disciplinary actions taken, or in process, against the individual. Professional Liability Insurance: The individual must provide evidence of professional liability insurance coverage in Ontario acceptable to the AATO.
Language Facility: If not required by the individual's home regulatory authority, the AATO may require proof of facility in English or French.
Criminal Records Check: If not required by the individual's home regulatory authority, or if the individual's criminal records check is not current, the AATO may require the individual to provide a current Criminal Records Check.
Proof of Good Character: The AATO may require proof of good character from the individual, including but not limited to, proof of no criminal, civil or regulatory actions, or unsatisfied claims and confirmation that the individual has not been refused certification for the last two years by any professional regulatory authority. The form for attestation of good character is attached hereto at Appendix A.
Terms, Conditions and Limitations: Any Terms, Conditions and Limitations imposed upon the individual's certification and practice by the individual's home regulatory authority, may be applied temporarily or permanently to the individual's certification in Ontario by the AATO.
Scope of Practice: Regardless of the scope of practice authorized to the individual pursuant to legislation and by the regulatory authority in the individual's home province or territory, the individual is restricted to the scope of practice specified by the Association of Architectural Technologists Act (Ontario) when practising in Ontario.

"Certification" refers to and includes a certificate, licence, registration, membership, or any other form of official recognition granted by a Canadian provincial or territorial regulatory authority to an individual. The certification must attest to the individual being currently qualified to practise the occupation and authorizes the individual to practise the occupation, use the title or designation relating to the occupation or both.
