Architectural technologist, requires a broader range of skills. Technologist are more involved in the design and construction process and in contract management. As an architectural technologist, you have more responsibility, you may work in your own private practice providing building design services to the public. Architectural technologist also carry signing authority on most construction documents, contracts and reports. An Accredited Architectural Technologist who carries his own insurance may be in private practice. Providing plans and overseeing projects for the public, up to Large and Complex Buildings as permitted under the current BCIN process Duties to include:

• Liaising with clients to understand their needs
• Selecting and leading a multi-disciplinary construction team
• Communicating with staff at every level, resolving any issues or delays
• Considering budget, safety and community requirements for a project
• Creating new building designs (Commercial/Residential)
• Advising on the restoration or interior alteration of an existing buildings
• Ensuring building code(s), municipality, planning and by-laws as well as environmental considerations are met
• Drawing detailed plans and blueprints using computer design programmes
• Working closely with contractors, engineers, surveyors, lawyers and planning departments
• Inspecting the structures during construction, to make sure they meet requirements
• Supervising other Technologist, Project Managers and Site Supervisors throughout each phase of the building’s design and construction
• Demonstrating knowledge of all areas of construction
• Writing bids for tender
• Managing several projects simultaneously with the support of jr. project managers
• Ensuring jobs are completed on time and to budget
• Working in an office, with occasional or frequent site visits and meetings.

An architectural technician is responsible for providing support for an architectural project from concept to completion. They help to provide technical building models, drawings, created using current technology and traditional methods. Duties to include:

• Collating and organizing technical building information from architects
• Preparing designs using CAD (computer aided design) software and traditional drawing methods
• Making site visits -Investigating and offering technical advice on factors that affect building developments, including user needs, site and building surveys, and regulatory requirements
• Monitoring designs for health and safety and contributing to risk assessments
• Coordinating detailed design information -Preparing specifications for construction work
• Preparing drawings, plans, and documents for statutory approvals
• Obtaining tenders for construction work
• Preparing applications for approval by regulatory bodies
• Contributing to meetings and document preparation
• Researching new design processes, building legislation and technology.

Registered Building Technologist

To oversee essential building task, such as estimating, contracts or site planning, reporting the results to the Sr. building technologist or construction manager. Position(s):Site manager, Site Supervisor, Facilities Manager.

Duties: Construction

• Overseeing the logistical requirements of a project
• Delegating work to colleagues within your team
• Meeting regularly with clients, third parties and other managers to report on progress
• Setting targets, objectives and responsibilities for all supervised staff
• Regularly reviewing timings, budget, labor, risk and project plans to ensure work stays on track
• Setting and agreeing budgets
• Conducting site visits to inspect work, check materials and ensure staff are following health and safety guidelines
• Dealing with contracts and mitigating the impact of any issues
• Ensuring the delivery of high-quality work within contract timescales
• Working in an office and on a construction site. 

• Overseeing building maintenance and support services such as cleaning, catering, hospitality, security or parking
• Ensuring buildings function smoothly throughout their operational life
• Inputting into the design stages of a project and identifying future maintenance issues
• Liaising with clients and contractors
• Creating a strategic management system, for the benefit of an organization's infrastructure and people
• Coordinating refurbishments and renovations
• Ensuring buildings meet health and safety and energy efficiency standards
• Managing budgets and accounts.

Registered Building Technician

To assist in essential building task, such as estimating, contracts or site planning, reporting the results to the registered building technologist or site supervisor or construction manage. Position(s):Assistant site manager, site technician.

Duties:

• Estimating project costs ahead of bidding for new contracts
• Negotiating with suppliers on the cost of materials, equipment and labor
• Checking the quality of suppliers
• Helping to plan each construction stage
• Drafting plans and blueprints using CAD (computer aided design) software
• Monitoring build progress Preparing sites before construction work begins
• Supervising contractor teams
• Working on a construction site or in an office.
